Reminiscences of a distant past, nature cradled by the changing of the seasons, treasures buried and uncovered in the culture of his country, every one of these beloved themes are dear to Nikolai Kuzmin. In these paintings, where everything has a glow and colours, flying or suspended time reminds us here of a morning’s light, there of the sparkle of youth. Pastel-hued landscapes and portraits narrate sweet and sensible scenes that seem strangely familiar to us. For all is about impression and feeling, precisely, in Kuzmin’s painting : ‘Quickly put on my canvas, concentrates of painting and light blend, progressively change their appearance and try to pass on what the eye is not fortunate enough to see.’ Light effects on matter, subtle colour hues: all in his painting leads the eye to the essential.

Nikolai Kuzmin’s painting is a wonderful instant. The story of a life one could be tempted to listen to with closed eyes.

Born in 1938 on the banks of the river Volga Nikolai Kuzmin is today recognized as one of the great representatives of the Muscovite School of artists. After his studies at the Stroganov Academy of Fine Arts in Moscow he participates in many exhibitions in Russia and in Europe. Several of his paintings today are to be found in collections at museums.

This large exhibition of Nikolai Kuzmin’s work is presented jointly by Matthieu Dubuc art gallery and Jacques Baumel multimedia library. It is part of the cultural programme ‘France – Russia 2010’, organised by Jacques Baumel multimedia library. It includes about fourty paintings by Kuzmin and will give the opportunity to admire some works to be presented in France for the first time. The paintings will be split up between the two places.

Cézanne, Gaugin, Matisse and Fauvism, Expressionnism...

The exhibition organised by Matthieu Dubuc art gallery looks far to establish relationships that question the pictorial practice of the great representative of the Muscovite School of artists Nikolai Kuzmin.

Nikolai Kuzmin paints from nature, in a brisk and assured gesture, and takes down all the bright sensations through powerful mixtures of colours: a lakeside landscape in Bavaria, a sunny day in Paris, a farewell scene... His compositions show a permanent tension between objective reality and subjective interpretation. The expressiveness of pure colour, throwing off the constraints of realistic illusion to suggest a sensible gap, reveals landscapes pared down till the essential and finally transcended.

Thus Nikolai Kuzmin’s world view is orchestrated by plastic and chromatic experiments, every one of them being a tribute to the masters of modern painting.
